Farm Fence Repair, Central Kentucky

A backyard fence that fails is a project. A farm fence that fails is a phone call.

When a run of woven wire goes slack or a brace lets go, it's cattle on the road, horses in the neighbor's hay, or goats in your garden. Farm fence repair is a different trade than patching a privacy panel: the fix has to hold against animals leaning on it every day, and it has to hold for years. That's why we repair the cause, not just the symptom.

Chafin Fence repairs board, woven wire, high-tensile, no-climb and combination farm fencing across Lexington, Fayette County and the farm counties around it, whoever installed it. Rotted posts get replaced to depth, failed corners get rebuilt as proper H-braces, wire gets re-stretched after the brace is fixed, and gates get re-hung to swing true.

What Fails on a Farm Fence

Six things we get called about, and what each one usually means.

Urgent

Wire down or cut

A tree limb, a truck, a bull, or a rusted-through splice. Animals find the gap within hours. We secure it the same day when we can and splice or replace the section properly.

Usual cause: storm damage, corrosion at a splice, impact
Urgent

Corner or end brace let go

The whole run goes slack at once because the wire has nothing to pull against. Re-tensioning without rebuilding the brace is a waste of a trip.

Usual cause: rotted brace post, frost heave, never braced right
Urgent

Gate sagging or won't latch

On a farm gate that's a door left open. Usually the gate post has moved, not the gate. We reset or replace the post and re-hang with adjustable hinges.

Usual cause: undersized or shallow gate post, hinge wear
Soon

Boards cracked or kicked out

Horses lean, kick and chew. A missing board becomes a horse through the fence. We match dimensions and species and can paint to match black or white.

Usual cause: horse pressure, weather checking, old nails
Soon

Leaning or rotted line posts

One leaning post loads the next two. Replaced to depth, in concrete where the ground calls for it, before the lean spreads down the run.

Usual cause: ground-contact rot, shallow set, wet soil
Soon

Wire slack, animals leaning through

Slack woven or high-tensile wire is an invitation. If the braces are sound we re-stretch; if not, see brace repair above.

Usual cause: years without re-tensioning, brace movement

A Repair Visit

What happens after you call.

01

Triage on the phone

Animals out, wire down, or a slow lean? That decides whether we come today or schedule the visit.

02

Walk the failure

We look past the break to the braces, posts and tension on either side of it, because that's usually where the cause is.

03

Firm quote on site

Repair scope, materials and price in writing, and an honest call on repair versus replacement for that run.

04

Fix the cause, then the break

Brace rebuilt or post reset first, then wire re-stretched, boards replaced, gate re-hung.

05

Walk it with you

You see the repair, you hear what caused it, and our work carries the 5-Year Craftsmanship Guarantee.

Repair or Replace

The honest rule we use on every farm run.

Repair it when

The bones are good

  • Line posts are solid and the failure is one section, one board, one gate
  • Corners and ends are sound, or one brace needs rebuilding
  • The wire is galvanized and not rusting through at the splices
  • Storm or impact damage on an otherwise healthy fence
  • The fence is under about 15 years old and was set to depth

Replace the run when

You'd be chasing it

  • More than roughly a third of the posts in the run are rotted or leaning
  • Wire is rusting through in multiple places, not just at one splice
  • Boards are failing every few panels, not in one spot
  • Posts were set shallow and the whole line heaves every winter
  • You're changing what the fence has to hold (cattle to horses, adding goats)

Farm Fence Repair FAQ

Questions from farm and horse owners.

Call (859) 552-8763 and tell us animals are loose. Containment failures go to the front of the schedule, and in most of Central Kentucky we can get a crew out the same day or the next morning to secure the breach, then come back for the permanent repair if materials have to be ordered.

We repair sections all the time: a downed board, a stretch of wire a tree came through, a rotted post, a sagging gate. If the posts and corners are sound, a section repair is the right call. If more than roughly a third of the posts in a run are failing, replacing the run usually costs less over ten years than chasing it post by post, and we'll show you the math either way.

Almost always the corner or end brace, not the wire. Wire pulls against the braces; when a brace post rots, heaves with frost, or was never braced properly, the whole run loses tension. We rebuild the brace assembly, then re-stretch the wire. Re-tensioning without fixing the brace just puts you back where you started.

Yes. Cracked or kicked-out boards, rotted line posts, loose nails and sagging runs on four-board, three-board and post-and-rail horse fence. We match board dimensions and species, set replacement posts to the original depth or deeper, and can paint to match if the fence is black or white.

Every repair is quoted after we see it, because a single board is a very different job than a corner brace, a gate post or a hundred feet of storm damage. We'll give you a firm number on site and tell you honestly if the run is worth repairing or should be replaced. Call (859) 552-8763 or request a free visit.

Yes, whoever installed it and whatever the material: board, woven wire, high-tensile, no-climb, welded wire, pipe or combination systems. We repair the failure and fix whatever caused it, so the same section doesn't fail again.

Lexington and Fayette County plus the surrounding farm counties: Woodford, Scott, Bourbon, Clark, Madison, Jessamine, Franklin and Mercer. If you're between those, call and we'll confirm your address. See our full service area.
