Four-board wood fencing is the Kentucky standard for horses — highly visible, strong, and safe for animals that spook and run. It's typically installed at 4.5 to 5 feet with posts set deep enough to hold when a horse leans or tests it. Vinyl ranch rail and coated wire with a board top rail are also good equine options. We don't recommend barbed wire for horses because of the injury risk; if a horse pasture needs wire, we use smooth or coated wire with a visible top rail. Wire-based livestock and agricultural fencing typically costs between $2 and $8 per linear foot installed. High-tensile wire runs on the lower end, woven wire and field fence sit in the middle, and board fencing costs more per foot because of the material and labor involved. Total cost depends on linear footage, number of strands or rails, post spacing, gate count, and terrain — Central Kentucky's rolling ground can add cost when posts have to be stepped along grade changes. Both are installed with treated posts and braced end assemblies to hold tension for decades.
